Views from the vineyard: Harvest 2021

Well, no-one’s ever going to say that 2021 was an easy year to grow grapes.

But despite rain, frost and a distinct lack of sunshine, Itasca Wines (our contract winemaking side of things) managed to pull in a good pinot blanc harvest, against all the odds.

Frost was the talk of the wine industry this year – from France to far-flung New Zealand, everyone seemed to have the same problem, with freezing conditions wrecking havoc across the vines. This pushed harvest well into October, which is unusually late, and an intense three weeks followed while we made the best of what we had.

Even in the face of these challenges, we’re delighted to say 2021 was a good harvest in the end. We were kept extremely busy with three times the number of customers than we had in 2020, and with full team spirit we somehow made it all work out. Our new 8 tonne press has certainly been earning its keep.

So here’s to 2021 – and may 2022 be bathed in plentiful sunshine and just the right amount of gentle rain while we continue our expansion!
